FRESNO, CALIF. — Food and beverage manufacturer Lyons Magnus LLC announced the voluntary recall of its 4 oz Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial frozen supplemental shakes.

Lyons Magnus said the action was in response to a recall of the products by its manufacturing partner, Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc., due to the potential for the products to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

The supplemental shakes – made at Prairie Farms’ Fort Wayne, Ind., facility – are sold to Lyons Magnus’ institutional customers, such as hospitals and nursing homes.

Information provided by the US Food and Drug Association (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the outbreak tied to the products dates back to 2018. As of Feb. 21, the CDC said 38 people infected with the outbreak strain of listeria were reported in 21 states, with 37 people hospitalized and 11 reported deaths. The federal agencies noted 34 of the known cases involved people who lived in long-term care facilities or were hospitalized before becoming ill.

Lyons Magnus said the products were not available for retail sale, and the company took “immediate action to halt the purchase of all products from the affected Prairie Farms facility, notify customers and ensure that impacted products were removed from distribution nationally,” when it learned of the issue.

The FDA said its investigation of the outbreak is ongoing and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

A full list of the recalled products, which includes a variety of ReadyCare and Imperial Frozen flavors, is posted online at the FDA’s website.
