LOS ANGELES — The co-founders of Two Spoons Creamery set out to formulate ice cream products that ticked multiple health and wellness boxes: high in protein, zero added sugar and GLP-1 compatible.
The company debuted this month its first four flavors – Rocky Road, Strawberries & Cream, Caramel Swirl, and Fudgy Brownie – all of which contain at least 30 grams of protein from a blend of whey protein isolate and milk protein concentrate.
"We spent a full year just working on our Rocky Road, a truly unique flavor in this category," co-founder Rich Ferreira said. "It's a decadent chocolate ice cream swirled with super fudgy brownies, toasted nuts and tons of our original marshmallow fluff. The whole thing is gluten-free and packs 30 grams of protein. We had to test thousands of batches to get it right. We broke a few machines in the process, but hey — if it's not full of fluff, is it even Rocky Road?"
The better-for-you ice cream makers, who trademarked the company’s slogan, “Two Spoons makes ice cream that loves you back,” noted that their products boast “delicious” inclusions such as salted caramel, strawberry jam and the aforementioned brownies, marshmallows and nuts.
Two Spoons’ founders said they make ice cream without added sugar or sugar alcohols. The company utilizes allulose, a low calorie sweetener that is found in figs and maple syrup – the ice cream makers referred to studies that explain how allulose can trigger the release of GLP-1. The formulators also pointed out their ice cream’s ingredients list doesn’t include seed oils, but does feature olive oil for its additional benefits.
Co-founder Gabe Zichermann said he and Ferreira grew up loving ice cream and they want a healthier option that doesn’t compromise.
“I've lost weight and improved my health on Ozempic and Wegovy,” Zichermann said of trending weight loss medications. “Knowing Two Spoons has the right macros and is just as satisfying as other brands — that's a win for us, our families, retailers and our country. GLP-1s are the future and we're meeting this moment."
For now, Two Spoons products are available at a limited number of retailers. But the company sells its ice cream flavors on its website for national shipping. The products also are available in Los Angeles and San Francisco via food delivery apps such as DoorDash and Uber Eats.
