PLANO, TEXAS – The nacho cheese flavor of Doritos can now be found in bottles of distilled spirits. The popular Frito-Lay North America and PepsiCo chip brand teamed with Empirical, a flavor company specializing in uncategorized spirits, to come up with the limited-time beverage.

The companies shared that creating the product involved Empirical extracting flavors from Doritos Nacho Cheese chips and “retaining their essence through vacuum distillation.” Per Empirical, its vacuum distillation process operates at lower temperatures than traditional distillation methods, and that made it possible to preserve “the full spectrum of flavors” found in the chips.

"Doritos is all about disrupting culture and bringing our fans unexpected, bold experiences," said Tina Mahal, Frito-Lay North America’s senior vice president of marketing. "We're always pushing our fans to try new things, so we figure it's time we disrupt the spirits category by offering our iconic nacho cheese flavor in a bottle."

Lars Williams, chef/distiller and chief executive officer at Empirical, explained that the company experiments with “really interesting flavors,” because it operates as an uncategorized spirits company. Williams said when team members at Empirical are developing products, they don’t have to be “stuck in a gin box or tequila box or whiskey box.”

He added: "And we can take something that has a unique and amazing flavor, like Doritos, and evolve it into something completely new."

The limited- edition bottles (42% ABV, 750 mL) will launch in January online via Empirical’s website, as well as in select New York and California markets.
